Standing with his family on the steps of the Southwest School, Quinn began by portraying the newly-renovated building as an example of his administration’s commitment to Torrington’s development. "Buildings like this represent so much more than mere brick and mortar," he said. "They represent our faith in the future and our desire to deliver our children a town that will continue to prosper and grow." Quinn outlined his goals for a possible next term, emphasizing his intentions to continue delivering responsible budgets while dealing with growing municipal costs. Reasons for such increases include employee salaries, rising school population and homeland security measures. Quinn described the Mayor’s Taskforce on Blight as a way to keep the city’s appearance up. The future Litchfield County Courthouse, to be built in central Torrington, is at the heart of his redevelopment plans to increase economic growth in the city. "This new courthouse, coupled with the $100-plus million downtown redevelopment plan, will continue to make dramatic improvements to the economy of our downtown," he said. Announcing the soon-to-be-completed Torringford School, Quinn vowed to maintain the integrity of the city’s education district and continue events such as street fairs and Heritage Day. He capped off his speech, calling the people of Torrington the greatest in the world. "I work for them and I need them to support me for two more years," he said. "Owen’s record of leadership and accomplishment speaks for itself," Secretary of the State candidate Audrey Blondin said. "Torrington is definitely moving in the right direction and it starts at the top." Chairman of the Mayor’s Committee on Hispanic Affairs, Luis Pizarro, was on hand to lend Quinn support. Pizarro, a two-year selectman, will be running for a second term this year. "He’s been very helpful in helping us in the Hispanic community," Pizaro said. "He’s a mayor to all the people." Democratic Committee Chairman Dan Pullium said this year’s campaign will be issue-based and positive. "Owen is committed to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Torrington," he said. To roll up his sleeves and continue the forward momentum that the last two terms in office created." Karsten Strauss can be reached by e-mail at torrington@registercitizen.com. |
