Bunnell served as fire chief for 19 years and volunteered for various town projects for the past 35. He has also served as chairman of the Fire and Emergency Medical Service Division.

"I'm a fireman, but that's not all I care about," Bunnell said. "I care about people, and I care about town politics."

Bunnell, who is a parent and a grandparent, said his personal life has finally "slowed down" to the point where he can devote the time he would like to enter the political arena.

"I'm willing and anxious to run for the Board of Selectmen," Bunnell said. "We have a town to run, not just this or that little group."

The Democratic Town Committee has not officially announced its candidate for First Selectman yet. When asked whether he would consider running for the position, Bunnell declined.

"I don't think it's appropriate for an individual to step right up to being First Selectman," Bunnell said. "Maybe after two years as selectman, but not right away."

Kevin Creed, chair of the Democratic Town Committee and present selectman, agreed with Bunnell.

"It takes about half a term to learn the ropes and get a real feel for the towns," said Creed.

Audrey Blondin, 20-year Litchfield resident and former selectman, supported Bunnell's choice to run. She also garnered the support of her fellow Democrats in her upcoming bid for the state Senate. The committee backed Blondin in a unanimous vote of confidence, making her the first representative from the Northwest Corner to run for state Senate.

Blondin was excited by the Democratic process and the approaching Democratic caucus, to be held July 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bantam Borough Hall.

"I'm proud to tell other representatives that I meet that Litchfield has proud, positive and energized Democrats," said Blondin.
